AmazonMicrosoft has released yesterday also an optional update KB3107998 for Lenovo devices. Update KB3107998 removes Lenovo USB Blocker Version 1.0.0.37, due to system crashes.

I was contacted yesterday about this update from a German user. At the time, Microsoft released this update, no further details was available. Searching the web indicating, that no further details was available. I only found a hint, that the update has something to do with Lenovo devices to prevent a system crash. Later on this night I found out, that the optional update is provides for several Windows versions:

  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows RT 8.1
  • Windows Server 2012
  • Windows 8
  • Windows RT
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows 7 SP1

Update KB3107998 removes Lenovo USB Blocker version 1.0.0.37, to fix a problem that occurs after you install October 2015 security update for Windows Kernel (3088195) on a Windows-based computer. Lenovo’s USB Blocker tool is typical crapware shipped by OEM vendors. It should block access to USB storage media (thumb drives, hard disks) until the user enters a password. The problem: Such tools tend to collide with kernel patches. After installing KB3088195, Lenovo systems crashes with a message (see here). :

Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We’re just collecting some error information, and then you can restart.

Microsoft identified Lenovo’s USB blocker version 1.0.0.37 as a root cause (see also this Lenovo support article). In case you are in need for the removed tool, please contact Lenovo for a fixed version. But my 2 cents: Stay with a cleaned system that don’t contain this Lenovo crapware.
